From the mighty halls of ancient Alexandria to the coffered ceilings of the Morgan Library in New York, human beings have had a long, enraptured relationship with libraries. Like no other concept and like no other space, the collection of knowledge, learning, and imagination offers a sense of infinite possibility. It’s the unrivaled realm of discovery, where every faded manuscript or mighty clothbound tome might reveal a provocative new idea, a far-flung fantasy, an ancient belief, a religious conviction, or a whole new way of being in the world.
Justin Fox is an award-winning writer and photographer based in Cape Town. Author of more than a dozen books, he is currently editor of Getaway Magazine. Justin was a Rhodes Scholar and received a doctorate in English from Oxford University, after which he became a research fellow at the University of Cape Town, where he taught part-time for the better part of two decades. His articles and photographs have appeared internationally in a number of publications, while his short stories and poems have appeared in various anthologies. He is a two-time Mondi journalism award winner. Recent books include The Marginal Safari, Whoever Fears the Sea, The Impossible Five and My Great Expedition.
Since 1993 Michael Kenna has visited Calais many times and wandered at length throughout the town, photographing its urban landscapes and its proud industrious heart: the lace factories. On his first visit he met Annette Haudiquet, then head curator of the Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle. It was during this meeting that the idea for the book Calais Lace, and the exhibition it accompanies, was born.
Lickshot is Ben Watts’s highly personalized scrapbook and travel diary. A triumph of lo-fi style, its pages are a delirious pastiche of gritty photographs, wonky polaroids, and hand-scrawled graffiti, held together by slashes of colored tape. Its contents reflect the incredible variety of Watts’s photographic subjects; from high school ice skaters, brooklyn biker gangs, lounging…
Organized thematically rather than geographically, each chapter reflects one of the travellers abiding impressions: the vibrant colours of the souks and textiles; the hubbub of its city streets; the country’s natural phenomena and more.
