William Kentridge is one of the most highly regarded artists of our time. This publication is released on the occasion of his first Swiss solo exhibition and is devoted to the multimedia cycle of works entitled The Nose. He produced this cycle while working on his staging of Shostakovich’s eponymous opera at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and it is based on Nikolai Gogol’s surreal short story The Nose from 1836. In addition to the large-scale video installation I am not me, the horse is not mine, which has previously been shown, for instance, at London’s Tate Modern in 2012, Museum Haus Konstruktiv is also exhibiting a number of little-known works for the first time – works that were produced in connection with The Nose, including sculptures, tapestries and paper works. Kentridge himself describes this work-complex as an elegy for the artistic language of the Russian constructivists and their stimuli for a societal new beginning.
