It is not often that graphic design is exhibited in a gallery space, but the overwhelmingly positive response to the opening of Drawing Show at David Krut Projects (DKP) proves that design fits comfortably alongside ‘fine art’ in the canon of contemporary visual culture. The opening attracted not only interested buyers and curious eyes, but also numerous insiders from the local design industry.
The exhibition features works produced by twelve of South Africa’s leading graphic designers and illustrators, and the show’s curator, Michael MacGarry, has evidently managed to commission a collection of original and visually splendid works from this incredible pool of design talent. Contributors include Garth Walker, Dirty Sanchez, Carina Comrie, disturbance, am I collective, Olivier Schildt, Joh Del, Johnny Kotze, Peet Pienaar, Givan Lotz, Michael MacGarry and Jason Bronkhorst.
David Krut Arts Resource (DK Arts) has always had a strong interest in design, and Drawing Show is our latest venture to coincide with the various design books and magazines published and distributed by David Krut Publishing. Our latest publication, Skill Set Volume 1: A Primer in Graphic Design will be available later this year, and it is a must for design practitioners, educators and students.
Written by MacGarry, Skill Set features design fundamentals and principles; practical advice and guidance; designing for and within the local context; examples of work by designers; Q & A with experienced local design professionals; and a glossary of highly-relevant resources and information.
Drawing Show ends 11 October. The gallery manager, Lucy Rayner, and gallery assistant, Fiona Pender, can be reached for queries at  011 447 0627 or firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com
