Children’s Reading with Zhi Zulu

On Sunday 3 June, at our Arts On Main space, we had the brightest little minds join us for a Children’s Storybook Reading of The Herd Boy by Niki Daly, read in Zulu and translated into English by the amazingly talented illustrator and visual story-teller, Zhi Zulu.

A group of 7 little children came into our bookstore for the reading and started drawing in our workshop, before the event began. As the reading started they circled around Zhi and all throughout they gathered closer and closer eagerly wanting to hear and see more. Questions were asked by Zhi, relating to the book and excited responses came from the children, after the reading a few stayed to finish the drawings they had started.

Easy to say they thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back for another reading in future.

The Herd Boy is a beautiful picture book about a boy who dares to dream of a big future – inspired by the life of former president, the late Nelson Mandela. It is a story of empowerment, self-belief and leadership.

Our bookstore has a collection of children’s storybooks published by Jacana in all 11 of our official languages.

Coming up in July, we have an illustration workshop hosted by Zhi Zulu that will be taking place at our bookstore in Parkwood – 151 Jan Smuts avenue.

More details will follow very soon.
