Stanford Gardens Update

It has been some time but we are moving forward nicely. The Stone Church garden is developing its infrastructure. We received a truckload of Stone pine offcuts which are now being used as support walls for raised gardens and we are building a wooden fence to protect the vegetables. There has been considerable growth of the beetroot and sweet cabbage crops, only a few weeks until harvest! We hope to pickle and bottle them under the Stanford Local Label.

Easygourmet is run by Sy Tchao, a Stanford resident, who is passionate about using local produce to produce quality foods. Stanford gardens and Easygourmet are working together to bring our products to the fore in Stanford and create an attractive local product.

Longmarket Garden is now half planted and we will be starting with our carrot interval planting very soon. Peppers, zucchinis and brinjals will follow.

The Propagation garden under the care of Vision, Eric and Bunty is already producing seedlings which are being planted out. Sy Tchao has donated heritage seed and we are building a seed bank from this. Seed banks are crucial in keeping the natural integrity of the plants and ensuring a future where plants are still able to produce seed for replanting.

Stanford Gardens has donated seedlings to De Bron School for planting in their school garden. We intend to develop this relationship, share our knowledge resources with the school children and broaden nutrition awareness in our community

Stanford Gardens is already a catalyst in bringing like-minded individuals together and plotting and planning abounds, as these folk look to build, around food production, a self-reliant, local economy. We will keep you updated with these ideas and actions which cross pollinate education, economy, culture and the arts, in creating a vibrant village

Our thanks go to Kim Sachs, David Krut Projects, Eric and Bunty and Sy for their support and drive in getting this initiative to the place it is now in. There is plenty still to do but we are now rooted and look forward to the new energies gathering.

Howard Krut
