Figuring Faith seeks to understand how faith and art intersect in the African context. It sheds light on the ways in which art explicates, exemplifies and challenges beliefs and rituals, and brings new insights to our understanding of art’s relationship to the human desire for transcendence.
The book arose from the exhibition Figuring Faith – Images of Belief in Africa held at the Standard Bank Gallery in 2006, curated by Fiona Rankin-Smith. It has been made possible with the general support of Standard Bank, the Wits Art Museum, the C. J. Petrow Foundation and the National Arts Council.
